Eugene Chin Yu, the first foray into politics, but has been active in civic organizations.

Republican U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss announced earlier this year that he wouldn’t seek re-election, and the Republican primary for Georgia’s open U.S. Senate seat got a little more crowded as an Augusta businessman joined the field.

Eugene Chin Yu, a Korean-born but an Augusta resident for almost 40 years, made his announcement at the National Federation of Republican Women Southeastern Regional Summer Conference held at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel in Atlanta on July 19th, 2013.

This is his first foray into politics, but he has been active in plenty of civic organizations, including a former president of the Federation of Korean Associations, representing 3.5million Koreans who belong to 186 chapters in the U.S.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to serve the people of the great State of Georgia,” said Eugene Chin Yu.” “America is a country of immigrants. Legal immigrants come to America not to just take but to give back. We are still “the Great Melting Pot” creating a whole harmonious common shared culture together.”

Yu is widely recognized for for his efforts in honoring the sacrifices and service of American soldiers who served during the Korean War. He has volunteered both his time and money to travel nationally in order to personally present Freedom Medallions to more than 43,000 Korean War veterans. He was at the forefront in the financing and construction of the Korean War Memorial in downtown Augusta.

“I feel it is my duty to respect and honor the men and women who protect our freedom. As a former U.S. soldier myself, I will fight the good fight and the resurgence of America’s promise for all Americans,” Yu said.

The American Dream is based on the premise that “if you work hard, have determination, develop a viable product or service, and are competitive, then you can succeed.” America became an economic super power because of the men and women who followed this dream.

“As a businessman, I know the importance of the free market in encouraging economic growth. We need less stifling legislation. We need to break down the anti-business barriers which inhibit manufacturing companies from operating here in America. Because it is imperative that America brings back the millions of blue collar and high-tech manufacturing jobs from abroad. Without spurring innovations, our economy will stagnate,” Yu said. “Through leveraging my global business experience, I will work tirelessly to make the American dream a reality.”

Meanwhile, already in the Senate GOP race are three congressmen, a former Georgia secretary of State and a MARTA engineer. Two of the congressmen, Jack Kingston of Savannah and Phil Gingrey of Marietta, have more than $2.5 million already in their campaign accounts. Yu’s campaign members also have been assiduously seeking others or organizations to help finance a multi-million dollar campaign.

Yu has dedicated his life to protecting the lives and freedom of Americans as a member of the U.S. Army military police, an Augusta Richmond County fireman, and a Richmond County Sheriff’s Deputy. He is the owner of Continental Military Services Inc. in Augusta and a former marketing and sales consultant at General Purpose Vehicles, which sells armored vehicles to the Korean and Egyptian militaries.

He attended George P. Butler High School and Harvard University’s executive education program.
