More than 16 million foreign tourists visited Korea this year, a record despite concerns that political troubles would hurt the tourism industry.
The Korea Tourism Organization said 15.9 million tourists visited Korea from January to November, up a whopping 31 percent compared to 2015, and they crossed the 16 million mark early this month. The previous record was 14.2 million in 2014.
"We had originally expected 16.5 million this year, but that number is expected to be reached by mid-December," a KTO staffer said.
Chinese tourists increased 37 percent to 7.54 million, and the number of Japanese visitors seems to be recovering, surging 25 percent.
Taiwanese tourists increased 64 percent, the highest growth, followed by Indonesians (up 53 percent) and Vietnamese (up 53 percent).
The KTO said it plans to focus on attracting more tourists from Southeast Asia by boosting marketing efforts there.
