Korea on Tuesday got the desperate win it needed to get closer to securing a berth in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, by defeating Uzbekistan 2-1 in the fifth match of the final round of Asian qualifiers.
Until the latest match, it ranked third in its group with seven points from four previous matches, behind Iran with 10 points and Uzbekistan with 9 points. Only the top two teams from each group are guaranteed an automatic spot in the World Cup.
Korea played a strong offense from the beginning of the match while Uzbekistan stayed focused on defense. But in the 24th minute, Uzbekistan scored the game's opener.
Korea managed to score the equalizer in the 66th minute, and Koo Ja-cheol scored the game winner in the 85th minute.
Korea will square off against the other teams in the group once again between March and September next year in the last qualifiers before the World Cup. Matches against Syria and Iran will take place at home, while those against China, Qatar and Uzbekistan will be away games.
