The Changwon city government received an award for actively communicating with communities through social media.
Hosted by the Korea Internet Interactive Communication Association and sponsored by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, the annual award is given to public entities or companies which endeavor to communicate with local citizens or customers, through social media such as Facebook, Kakao Story and other blogging sites, to better serve them in promoting and disseminating their activities.
In this year's evaluations, 169 public organizations and 263 companies were assessed by some 7,500 customers and experts based on 85 criteria.
The city government has actively communicated with locals through various social media in delivering information on events and festivals there as well as promoting local tourism. For example, during its annual cherry blossom festival in Jinhae, the city government posted photos and videos to promote the event and share relevant information, receiving comments from residents to reflect their ideas and opinions.
Social media plays as an effective communication channel especially in emergency situations such as typhoons or earthquakes, by giving relevant information promptly to local residents. Changwon has over 43,000 followers on Facebook, over 40,000 on Kakao Story, and over 27,000 on Twitter.
"We will do our best to provide not only useful information to residents but also fun and interactive content, and continue to work hard to communicate with them both online and offline," said Kim Byung-seok, a Changwon official.
